After watching The Affair (2015) I felt it fitted well into this week’s focus on character. Firstly, I appreciated the splitting of the narrative from the point of view of the two main characters Alison and Noah, especially when each of their accounts turn out to be two completely different. Using this technique, it makes it far easier to have a series based around more than one protagonist. The series has a very clear structure with equal amounts of importance being paid to both Alison and Noah, so there is no confusion that they are both sharing the lead. The secondary characters then become the props around the story. In the second series the secondary characters are given more airtime. However, their story lines are being told in relation to the main narrative with their reactions serving only as a response to Alison’s and Noah’s actions.
